2365 LEVEL 2 in ELECTRICAL
Just starting out, or need to do the Level 2? This is the first step to gaining a Gold Card.
Your Home Country Qualification → UK Gold Card Electrician
You’re a qualified electrician — but UK employers need UK qualifications. This package takes you through every step required to gain full UK recognition, from having your overseas experience assessed right through to sitting your final competency assessment and walking away with your ECS Gold Card.
We guide you through every step. You complete your own NVQ portfolio with full tutor support throughout.
Via recorded Microsoft Teams interviews, our team writes your entire NVQ portfolio on your behalf.
The Overseas Electrical Package is designed for qualified electricians from outside the UK who want to achieve full UK industry recognition and work legally and confidently as an electrician in England, Wales or Scotland.
You hold an electrical qualification from your home country and have real hands-on experience — but it’s not automatically recognised in the UK.
UK employers require you to hold recognised qualifications and carry an ECS Gold Card on site. This package gets you exactly that.
The NVQ Level 3 Experienced Worker Assessment (Step 5) requires at least 5 years of documented electrical experience. Most overseas applicants qualify easily.
Don’t have 5 years yet? You can still get your Gold Card — contact us to discuss your route.
Some steps — like the 18th Edition study — can begin before you arrive. Others require you to be physically present in the UK. We’ll guide you on timing.
Rather than piecing together courses from different providers, this package gives you a single clear pathway — with Sparky managing each step alongside you.
That’s exactly what our free initial assessment is for. We’ll review your background, identify which steps apply to you, and map out your personal route.
Not sure if you need all 6 steps? Some overseas candidates may not need every step depending on their existing qualifications. We’ll assess this during your free initial consultation — no commitment required.
The difference between Standard and Premium is in how your NVQ Level 3 portfolio is handled — the most time-consuming part of the process. Everything else in the pathway is the same.
Full tutor support throughout — you complete your NVQ portfolio with our guidance at every step.
Our team writes your entire NVQ portfolio through recorded Microsoft Teams interviews — no writing required from you.
The Premium package is especially popular with overseas candidates where English is a second language — our team interviews you, then handles all the written work. Ask us during your free consultation and we’ll help you decide.
Every overseas electrician’s background is different. Use our free 2-minute Qualification Pathway Tool to find out exactly which steps you need — based on your experience, qualifications, and goals.
Every overseas electrician follows this route. Some steps can run concurrently and some may not apply to you — we’ll map out exactly what’s needed during your free assessment.
Before progressing to the NVQ, your overseas qualification must be formally recognised in the UK. There are two routes depending on your background — we’ll confirm which applies to you during your free assessment.
If your overseas qualification is a recognised trade certificate, it may be assessed through ECCTIS — the UK’s official qualification comparison body. If ECCTIS confirms equivalence to a UK Level 2 Electrical Installation certificate, you can proceed directly to Step 2.
Visit ECCTIS Industry Skill Statements ↗If your qualification doesn’t map to UK Level 2 through ECCTIS — or if you hold a degree or academic qualification rather than a practical trade certificate — you’ll complete our Level 2 Recognition Route. This is a 3–4 week assessment-based process where we formally establish your skills through practical and written assessments here in the UK.
All electricians working on UK construction sites must hold a current Health & Safety certificate. This short course covers UK site safety rules, regulations, and emergency procedures.
Delivered at our London (Isleworth) or Manchester (Hyde) centre — or at selected UK-wide venues.
The 18th Edition is the UK’s core wiring regulations standard — every practising electrician must hold a current certificate. The course is delivered online and the exam is taken at an approved test centre.
Good news: this step can begin before you arrive in the UK. We can set you up with online study materials as soon as you enrol.
✓ Can start before arriving in the UKThis City & Guilds qualification demonstrates your ability to inspect, test, and certify electrical installations to UK standards. It covers both the theory and practical elements of periodic inspection and testing.
Steps 3 and 4 can often be studied concurrently, saving time on the overall programme.
✓ Can run alongside Step 3This is the core qualification — the NVQ Level 3 in Electrotechnical Technology achieved through the Experienced Worker Assessment route. It requires you to document your electrical work experience through a portfolio and assessor observations.
For learners registered from 1 May 2026, this includes three observations — one face-to-face at your workplace and two carried out remotely by live video call from site. Between them, your assessor needs to see you:
We’re flexible on which visit covers what — your assessor fits each observation around whatever you’re working on at the time, and more than one activity can be captured in a single visit where practical.
Requires: Level 2 recognition (or equivalent) + minimum 5 years of electrical experience.
Standard package: You write your portfolio with our full tutor support.
Premium package: We write it for you via recorded Microsoft Teams interviews.
Don’t have 5 years’ experience? You can still achieve your ECS Gold Card — you just need to complete the Level 2 Recognition Route first, which builds the foundation for your onward journey. Every electrician’s background is different and we can absolutely help. Get in touch to discuss your circumstances →
The final assessment confirms your practical competence as a fully qualified electrician. This 4-hour exam is conducted at an approved assessment centre and covers a range of practical electrical tasks under exam conditions.
Sparky guides you through full preparation for this assessment — mock exams, practical walkthroughs, and one-to-one coaching in the weeks leading up to your exam date.
On successful completion, you’ll be eligible to apply for your ECS Gold Card — the industry-standard proof of your qualifications as a fully competent UK electrician.
The ECS Gold Card is recognised by all major UK contractors and is required on virtually every commercial and industrial construction site in the UK. It’s the final proof that you’re fully qualified and ready to work.
Your exact price is confirmed following a free assessment of your qualifications and experience — because no two overseas candidates need exactly the same steps.

Questions we hear most often from overseas electricians starting their UK journey.
Not for everything. The 18th Edition (BS 7671) online course and study can begin before you arrive — we can enrol you and set you up with materials as soon as you join. All practical assessments, classroom sessions, and workplace observations do require you to be in the UK. We’ll map out a timeline that works around your arrival date.
No. We work with electricians from all countries. The first step is checking whether your qualification can be assessed through ECCTIS — the UK’s official qualification comparison body. If it can be matched to a UK Level 2 Electrical Installation certificate, you move straight on. If not, we put you through our Level 2 Recognition Route to formally establish your skills here in the UK. Either way, we’ve got you covered.
ECCTIS is the UK government-recognised body for comparing overseas qualifications against UK standards. If your overseas electrical qualification is a recognised trade certificate, ECCTIS may be able to confirm it is equivalent to a UK Level 2 — which would allow you to skip the Level 2 Recognition Route entirely. However, if you hold a degree or academic qualification, or if your qualification doesn’t map directly, ECCTIS won’t be the right route and you’ll complete our Level 2 Recognition Route instead. We’ll advise you on which applies during your free assessment. You can find out more at ecctis.com/industry-skill-statements.
The NVQ Level 3 EWA route requires a minimum of 5 years’ electrical experience — but not having 5 years doesn’t mean you can’t get your Gold Card. It simply means your pathway looks slightly different. In most cases, the right starting point is the Level 2 Recognition Route, which formally establishes your existing skills here in the UK and sets the foundation for your onward journey to Level 3 and Gold Card. Every electrician’s background is different and we deal with a wide range of circumstances — get in touch and talk to us. We can definitely help.
The NVQ portfolio requires documenting your electrical work experience in a specific structured format. For many candidates — especially those for whom English isn’t their first language — this is the hardest part. With the Premium package, our team conducts recorded Microsoft Teams interviews with you, asking about your work history and experience. We then write and structure your entire portfolio on your behalf from those recordings. You just need to answer our questions — we do the rest.
The programme typically takes 3 to 6 months from start to Gold Card, depending on how quickly you progress through each step and whether you need the Level 2 Recognition Route. Steps 3 and 4 (18th Edition and 2391-52) can run concurrently, which saves time. We’ll give you a realistic timeline estimate during your initial assessment.
It depends entirely on your existing qualifications. Step 1 may be handled through ECCTIS rather than the Level 2 Recognition Route — or in some cases the recognition element is already satisfied. If you already hold a valid 18th Edition certificate or an existing 2391 qualification, those steps may also be waived. We assess each candidate individually — the free initial consultation is specifically designed to identify exactly which steps apply to you and which don’t.
The ECS (Electrotechnical Certification Scheme) Gold Card is the standard proof of qualification for electricians working on UK construction sites. The vast majority of employers and principal contractors require site workers to carry a valid ECS card. Without it, you will not be admitted to most commercial and industrial sites in the UK. The Gold Card confirms you hold the highest level of electrical qualification and are fully competent to work unsupervised.
Our main centres are in London (Isleworth) and Manchester (Hyde). However, many elements of the programme — including the NVQ portfolio work, 18th Edition study, and some assessments — can be delivered remotely or arranged at third-party venues UK-wide. We’ll confirm centre requirements for each step when you enrol.
