Just Starting Out

New to the trade, changing careers, or not sure where to begin.

I want to become an electrician but have no experience — where do I start?
Your starting point is the 2365 Level 2 Diploma in Electrical Installation — it has no entry requirements and is designed to take you from the very beginning. If you’d rather get several qualifications in one go, our Electrical Beginners Package bundles Level 2 with the 18th Edition, Part P and Health & Safety. Not sure? See courses for beginners.
What’s the full path from beginner to qualified electrician?
The usual route is: Level 2 Diploma → Level 3 Diploma → 18th Edition → NVQ Level 3 (2357) → ECS Gold Card. Our guide to the Gold Card explains each step, and the Pathway Tool maps it to your situation.
Do I need any qualifications or to be good at maths to start?
No formal qualifications are needed for the Level 2. A basic, practical level of maths helps with calculations later on, but everything is taught from the ground up with tutor support throughout. If you have a genuine interest in the trade and willingness to learn, you’re ready to enrol on the Level 2.
How long does it take to become a fully qualified electrician?
From a standing start, around 18–30 months depending on your pace, since the NVQ Level 3 requires real on-site work to evidence. Experienced workers move much faster via the Experienced Worker Assessment. We can plan the most efficient route for you — get in touch.
I’m not sure which course I need — can you help?
Yes — use our free 2-minute Qualification Pathway Tool. Answer 6 short questions about your experience and goals and we’ll tell you exactly which courses you need, in the right order. The results are emailed to you instantly, with no sign-up required. Or just call us on 0800 061 4400.

Foundation — 2365 Level 2 & Level 3

The core electrical installation diplomas.

What is the 2365 Level 2 and do I need it?
The 2365 Level 2 Diploma is the foundational knowledge qualification for becoming an electrician. It’s the standard first step and a prerequisite for the Level 3 and for the Experienced Worker route to the Gold Card.
What’s the difference between Level 2 and Level 3?
Level 2 covers the fundamentals; the Level 3 Diploma advances into electrical science, design, fault diagnosis and inspection & testing. Most people need both before the NVQ Level 3. You can also take them together as the Combined Level 2 & 3 programme.
Can I do Level 2 and Level 3 together?
Yes — the Combined Level 2 & 3 Diploma takes you through both in a single 28-week programme. It’s more efficient and better value than enrolling separately, and you’re awarded both City & Guilds qualifications at the end.
Can I study while working full time?
Yes. Our diplomas use blended learning — self-paced eLearning, evening virtual classrooms and weekend practical days at our centres — so most of our learners study around full-time work. See the Level 2 or Level 3 pages for the schedule.
I already have experience — do I have to do the full course?
Maybe not. Our Level 2 Recognition Route assesses your existing skills unit by unit, so you only train in the areas where you have genuine gaps — saving time and cost while still achieving the full 2365-02 qualification.

18th Edition (2382)

The wiring regulations qualification every UK electrician needs.

Do I need the 18th Edition and what is it?
The 18th Edition (C&G 2382, BS 7671) is a legal requirement for anyone carrying out, supervising or designing electrical work in the UK, and one of the three qualifications required for the ECS Gold Card. If you hold an older edition you’ll need to update.
Should I do the 2382-22 or the 2382-26?
Both are valid and both lead to the same long-term validity if completed after mid-April 2026. The 2382-22 is available to book today; the 2382-26 (Amendment 4) is the newer version. Full guidance and options are on the 18th Edition page, or read our course & exam guide.
Can I sit the 18th Edition exam at home?
Yes. You can sit it remotely (proctored online) from home, or at our London or Manchester centre, and you can add the online course or take exam-only. See all the options and prices.
How long does it take to prepare for the 18th Edition?
Most candidates are ready after 20–40 hours of self-study (typically 2–3 days of focused work) using the online course. It’s an open-book exam, so knowing how to navigate your BS 7671 quickly is key. Start on the 18th Edition page.
I only hold the 17th Edition — what do I do?
The 17th Edition is no longer current and isn’t accepted for Gold Card or NVQ purposes. There’s no bridging exam — you sit the full 18th Edition. The good news is it’s open book with a 60% pass mark, and our course covers what’s changed. Book your update here.

Inspection & Testing (2391)

Qualifying to inspect, test and certify installations.

What is the 2391 and do I need it?
The C&G 2391 qualifies you to inspect, test and certify electrical installations — issuing EICs and EICRs. It’s required for the Approved Electrician route and widely expected by employers. Entry requires the 18th Edition as a minimum.
What’s the difference between the 2391-50, 51 and 52?
The 2391-50 covers initial verification (new installs, EICs); the 2391-51 covers periodic inspection (existing installs, EICRs); the 2391-52 combines both and is the most widely recognised. We recommend the 52 for most people. Compare all three here.
Do I need my NVQ Level 3 before I can take the 2391?
There’s no strict rule, but you’re expected to have strong practical knowledge and the 18th Edition. The 2391 builds directly on that. If you’re unsure whether you’re ready, ask us before booking and we’ll give you an honest answer.
I’ve never carried out testing before — how do I prepare?
Our one-day Introduction to Inspection & Testing is hands-on practical training on the wiring rig with no exam — ideal preparation before sitting the 2391, or a confidence refresher if it’s been a while.
Should I do the 2391 as a classroom course or online?
The 2391-52 is available as a 5-day classroom course or as online study plus centre assessments — both include the exams. The 50 and 51 are online plus centre assessment. See delivery options and dates.

Part P (2383-10)

For domestic notifiable electrical work.

What is Part P (2383-10) and do I need it?
The C&G 2383-10 is required if you carry out notifiable electrical work in domestic properties and want to self-certify as a competent person. Most approved contractor schemes (NICEIC, NAPIT) require it for membership. It’s an open-book exam, available at our centre or at home.
Is Part P the same as the 18th Edition?
No. Part P is the Building Regulations element covering electrical safety in dwellings; the 18th Edition (BS 7671) is the technical wiring standard. Part P requires work to comply with BS 7671, but they’re separate qualifications. See Part P and the 18th Edition.

NVQ Level 3 & the ECS Gold Card

The final step to becoming a fully qualified, site-ready electrician.

What qualifications do I need for the ECS Gold Card?
Three things: an NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation, a current 18th Edition certificate, and a current Health & Safety qualification (typically the SPA test). Our full Gold Card guide walks through every route.
What is the NVQ Level 3 (2357) and how is it different from the diplomas?
The 2357 NVQ is competence-based — it’s assessed from a portfolio of real on-site work, not exams. The 2365 diplomas prove your knowledge; the NVQ proves you can apply it. You need both to reach the Gold Card.
What’s the fastest route to the Gold Card?
For those with a Level 2 and 5+ years’ experience, the Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA) is the fastest — no classroom, assessed on your real work, often completed in 8–12 weeks. Otherwise it’s the standard 2357 NVQ route.
How do I actually apply for the Gold Card?
Once your NVQ Level 3, 18th Edition and Health & Safety are all complete and in date, you apply online through the JIB ECS portal and pay the card fee; cards are typically issued within 2–4 weeks. Full step-by-step in our Gold Card guide.
Does the ECS Gold Card expire?
Yes — it’s valid for 5 years. Renewal needs an updated Health & Safety test; your NVQ Level 3 doesn’t need repeating. Keep your 18th Edition current too. More detail in the Gold Card guide.

Experienced Electricians (EWA)

Years on the tools but no formal Level 3? This is for you.

I’ve worked for years with no formal qualification — can I still get qualified?
Yes. The Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA, C&G 2346) is a portfolio-based NVQ Level 3 route that assesses your existing on-the-job competence — no classroom, no written exams. It’s the fastest route to the Gold Card for experienced workers.
What do I need to qualify for the EWA?
A minimum of 5 years’ hands-on experience as a working electrician, plus a Level 2 electrical qualification, and you must be working in the UK to gather portfolio evidence. Full eligibility on the EWA page.
How long does the EWA take and what’s involved?
Many candidates finish in 8–12 weeks (max registration 18 months). You gather workplace evidence with assessor support and complete the AM2E practical assessment (arranged via NET). A Premium option lets our team write your portfolio from recorded interviews. See the EWA page.
I’ve got experience but no Level 2 — what then?
You’ll start with the Level 2 Recognition Route, which formally establishes your existing skills against the Level 2 standard, then progress straight onto the EWA. Talk to us and we’ll map it out.

Overseas-Trained Electricians

Qualified abroad and want to work in the UK.

I qualified abroad — can I work as an electrician in the UK?
Yes. Our Overseas Electrician Package takes you from qualification recognition through to the NVQ Level 3 and ECS Gold Card as a managed programme, including any top-up courses you need.
What is ECCTIS and do I need it?
ECCTIS is the UK’s official body for comparing overseas qualifications to UK standards. If your qualification maps to a UK Level 2, you may skip the Recognition Route; if not, you complete our Level 2 Recognition Route. We confirm which applies during your free assessment — see the Overseas Package.
Do I need to be in the UK before I can start?
Not for everything — the 18th Edition online study can begin before you arrive. Practical assessments, classroom sessions and workplace observations require you to be in the UK. We build a timeline around your arrival. Details on the Overseas Package.
How long does the overseas route take?
Typically 3–6 months from start to Gold Card, depending on your starting point and how quickly you progress. Some steps (18th Edition and 2391) can run alongside each other to save time. See the full package.
