Foundation Courses FAQ

Common Questions

Everything you need to know about our Foundation courses before you enrol.

Do I need any experience to start the Level 2?

No experience is required at all. The Level 2 Diploma is designed for complete beginners and covers everything from scratch. All you need is a willingness to learn and a basic level of literacy and numeracy.

What is the difference between Level 2 and Level 3?

The Level 2 covers the fundamentals of electrical installation — the essential theory and practical knowledge for entry-level work. The Level 3 builds on this with more advanced topics and is required before you can progress to the NVQ Level 3 and ECS Gold Card. Most electricians need both.

Can I do the Level 2 and Level 3 together?

Yes. We offer a combined Level 2 and Level 3 programme that covers both qualifications in one continuous package. It takes around 25 weeks on a part-time blended learning basis and is more cost-effective than booking them separately.

What is the Recognition Route?

The Recognition Route (also called Recognition of Prior Learning or RPL) is for candidates who already have some electrical knowledge or experience — including overseas qualifications. We assess what you already know and only train you in the gaps, saving you time and money.

How long does the Level 2 take?

The standard Level 2 programme takes 10 weeks, delivered on evenings and weekends (blended learning) or as 3 days per week face-to-face in centre. Fast Track options may be available — contact us to discuss your timeframe.

What do I do after completing Level 2?

After Level 2 you can progress to Level 3, then move on to your Essential Courses (18th Edition and 2391 Inspection & Testing). Once all of those are complete, you’ll be ready for the NVQ Level 3 and ultimately your ECS Gold Card. Use our free Pathway Tool to map your exact route.
